Overview

The Tsum Valley Trek, opened to trekkers in 2008, is a journey into one of Nepal’s most secluded Himalayan valleys. Known as the “Hidden Valley”, Tsum is rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, featuring authentic villages, ancient monasteries, meditation caves, and unique spiritual experiences. The valley lies at the foothills of the Ganesh Himal and Shingri Himal ranges, bordering Tibet to the north.

What To Expect

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu – 1,400 m

  • Transfer to hotel in Thamel.
  • Free time to rest, explore, or shop for gear.

Day 2: Kathmandu → Machha Khola – 900 m

  • 8–9 hrs jeep drive via Dhading or Gorkha, passing rural villages and hill landscapes.

Day 3: Machha Khola → Jagat – 1,340 m (6–7 hrs trek)

  • Trek along riverbanks, narrow trails, suspension bridges, and hot springs.

Day 4: Jagat → Lokpa – 2,040 m (6–7 hrs trek)

  • Enter restricted Tsum Valley area via Philim.
  • Steep climb through forests, waterfalls, and settlements.

Day 5: Lokpa → Chumling – 2,386 m (4–5 hrs trek)

  • Descend to Siyar Khola, ascend through pine forests and Buddhist villages.
  • Views of Ganesh Himal.

Day 6: Chumling → Chhokang Paro – 3,031 m (5–6 hrs trek)

  • Cross suspension bridges and mani walls.
  • Explore Chhokang Paro village and traditional Tsumba culture

Day 7: Chhokang Paro → Nile – 3,361 m (4–5 hrs trek)

  • Gentle uphill through fertile fields, visiting spiritual sites like Milarepa’s Cave.

Day 8: Nile → Mu Gompa → Nile – 3,700 m (4–5 hrs round trip)

  • Visit Mu Gompa monastery, one of the region’s most sacred sites.
  • Optional detour to Dhephu Doma Nunnery.

Day 9: Nile → Rachen Gompa – 3,240 m (3–4 hrs trek)

  • Short trek and descent to Rachen Gompa, an active spiritual center.

Day 10: Rachen Gompa → Chumling – 2,386 m (6 hrs trek)

  • Scenic descent through villages and prayer wheels.

Day 11: Chumling → Lokpa – 2,040 m (5 hrs trek)

  • Follow river through forests and terraced fields, leaving upper Tsum behind.

Day 12: Lokpa → Jagat – 1,340 m (6 hrs trek)

  • Retrace trail through Philim and cliffside paths back to Jagat.

Day 13: Jagat → Machha Khola – 900 m (6 hrs trek)

  • Final day of trekking, warmer climate and familiar surroundings.

Day 14: Machha Khola → Kathmandu – 1,400 m (8–9 hrs drive)

  • Long drive back to Kathmandu. Free evening in Thamel.

Day 15: Rest/Buffer day in Kathmandu

  • Optional sightseeing (Swayambhu, Boudhanath), shopping, or massage.

Day 16: Departure

  • Transfer to the airport; trip concludes.
